From John:
“I’m sitting in a house in Knoxville Tennessee waiting for my ride back to the airport to take me back home to Fort Worth, it seems these trips are never long enough to really crack the surface of each person involved in these events.
i am very grateful to have shared a room with paul, we talked into the night about God’s love for the downtrodden and abandoned along with our duty to serve them and the struggle within our hearts as to how that looks. i feel like we are on the verge of that with Vessels, we are still struggling through the coming together part of it all but i feel as though the root of it is where Gods heart resides. as i have been reading through this book i had some trepidation about how i would view the many laws and guidelines of the Bible but it has served to drive home a serious point. God is our provider, now this is nothing new but when you discover the rules of harvest and how when the crops were harvested you were to leave the edges of the field unharvested so the poor and the widows could come and gather food to eat you begin to see the true heart of the Father. a Father who so deeply cares for his creation regardless of their status in our society. we need to live like this, instead of hoarding all our things and trying to get the next this or that we should be in tune with the heart of the Father and his heart beats for the poor and overlooked.
now i will be the first to admit that i am terrible at this, i do what i can when i meet those less fortunate but at the same time i don’t go out of my way to interact with them. that is what this Vessels thing is all about, engaging. stepping out of our comfort zones.
let’s step out and be the church, let’s be who we are truly meant to be.
hear the heartbeat of the Father.”

[This essay was born through noticing Bono’s reference to Isaiah 58 in his 2006 Presidential Prayer breakfast speech. Enjoy ~Bo Liles]
Why do we fast? Why do we deny ourselves some things, whether it be food, or television, or internet usage, or chocolate? Do we fast only when we are asked to by the church? Maybe we fast on those occasions when we are in need of divine direction concerning some pressing need? I would say these are all legitimate reasons, and yet do we understand fasting? I mean, personally, I am not really a fan of it – even if I know it is good for my own spiritual and emotional balance.
Isaiah 58 is a chapter on fasting, but in a way that speaks more authentically than the typical “Okay God, I’ll skip a few meals if you will pay my rent via Fedex’d miracle” scheme.
[I’ve hopefully gotten your interest - so click below to read the rest of the essay]
